Clinical Lead

We’re looking for a Clinician to join our Team. This position is a unique opportunity to work within an integrated practice collaboration involving Judges, Crown Prosecutors, Duty Counsel, Police, Probation and a dedicated Treatment Provider. You will play a key role in guiding the treatment intervention and practice approaches for a population of individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system as a result of criminal activity associated with a drug addiction. About the Calgary Drug Treatment Court

The Calgary Drug Treatment Court provides an integrated justice and treatment program for individuals facing 1-5 years in custody for criminal charges associated with a drug addiction. To enter the program, participants plead guilty to charges before the court. They then enter a minimum one-year program where they receive a range of services and supports to address their needs, end their involvement in criminal activity, and promote their health and mental health. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a sentence that includes no further time in custody.

Role of the Clinical Lead

The CDTC Clinical Lead provides clinical supervision of CDTC Case Management services to ensure quality client care. The CDTC Clinical Lead oversees treatment planning and psycho-social interventions, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical practices. This role works closely with the CDTC CEO to inform clinical aspects of program development.

Key responsibilities:

Clinical Supervision:

  • Coordinates and provides case consultation
  • Provides clinical guidance, assisting Case Managers to integrate theoretical and conceptual learning and apply related skills and strategies in their work with participants
  • Oversees treatment planning and psycho-social intervention, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical guidelines
  • Guides treatment planning and intervention approaches to align with the Drug Treatment Court model and best practices, ensuring ongoing fidelity with the DTC model
  • Works with Case Manager’s to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements of applicable professional associations and colleges
  • Develops a positive alliance with staff, conducive to an effective supervisor-supervisee relationship 
  • Oversees staff practices with respect to documentation, including internal progress reports and case notes, ensuring alignment with best practice
  • Participates in evaluation of staff in the areas of treatment planning and intervention, including reporting and record-keeping
  • Identifies potential emerging issues related to compassion fatigue or burnout, and intervenes to support the wellbeing of staff

Clinical Assessment and Intervention:

  • Conducts clinical screening assessment with program applicants
  • Provides clinical assessment and intervention for program participants as needed
  • Intervenes with participants to change patterns of criminal and addictive thinking
  • Liaises with psychiatric and psychological services on behalf of the organization

Risk Management:

Works closely with the CEO to:

  • Inform clinical aspects of program development
  • Identify and plan to resolve any existing or emerging legal or ethical issues
  • Manage and mitigate existing and emerging risks to program staff, participants, the community and the CDTC Society

Clinical Case Management:

The Clinical Lead may be required to provide Clinical Case Management for a small caseload of 2 or 3 participants. This role involves counselling and assisting participants to build and sustain a recovery lifestyle, linking them with needed services and resources through: Assessment; Planning; Linkage; Monitoring and Advocacy.

Other duties:

  • Participates in Pre-court and Program meetings, providing clinical consultation to the larger CDTC partnership and supporting effective collaboration
  • Participates in the rotating on-call schedule
  • Represents the organization in projects or initiatives such as community education, Drug Treatment Court education, conference presentations, etc.
  • Facilitates and supervises groups, particularly those with clinical content

Skills and Qualifications

  • Clinical Masters degree or Registered Psychologist. Must be registered with the appropriate regulatory body.
  • Strong knowledge of addictions and effective treatment approaches
  • Strong knowledge of the intersection between substance-use-disorder and criminal justice involvement, and effective interventions to address criminogenic thinking and behaviour
  • Appreciates and supports harm reduction and recovery-oriented approaches
  • 5+ years’ experience in the fields of addictions and/or criminal justice
  • Excellent collaborative skills
  • Experience providing Clinical Supervision
  • Able to work weekdays - some evening and weekend work may be required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Completion/submission of a Criminal Record Check
  • Must be able to attain security clearance to enter the Calgary Remand Centre
